Imagine you are reading a novel in which the characters have ever changing personalities and names and actions which are  completely random. It is a novel where rationality, sense and justice are absent and which ends abruptly with most of its issues unresolved.

Sounds familiar?

For most people that's what life's like, sort of interesting, full of unconnected people and events and finally without much, if any, meaning.

And that's the big word - MEANING.

We humans need meaning and structure. When we don't have it we begin to unravel. In extreme cases we may fragment, do terrible things, even kill ourselves..

Recently I taught at a school for dyslexic and autistic children. These were young people often without any structure at all. They were unable to do what most of us succeed at doing - they were unable to IMPOSE a structure on what appears to be life's irrational mess.

I tried to help them by telling them stories and was impressed by the way that they could absorb and remember these stories.

Some of the stories were about myself and they invariably asked if the stories were true.

The fact is that when a section of ordinary life is recounted as a story, is PERCEIVED as a story, then it automatically gains a dramatic force and power that seems to separate it from NORMAL life.

A story recounting a real event can be TRUER than the simple fact of the event itself. It is TRUER because a story enables us to step back and view an event objectively.

The more objective we are, the stronger we are. When we are subjective we are often too much inside an event to correctly appraise it and thus control our attitudes towards it.

Ragnarok Theatre is about telling a story - and using the story to step back, just a little, and by gaining a little distance, to see what's really going on.

BRENDAN SOMERS

The Ragnarok Theatre Company creates challenging
and topical theatre.

Its first production was BLOODLINES which was
a meditation through myth, fairy tale, poetry and
reminiscence based around a violent attack that
was made on RTC's founder, Brendan Somers.

BLOODLINES was designed to appeal to older
children as well as adults

RTC's production
"FLOWER ARRANGING IN THE DARK HOUSE"
is based around the Brothers Grimm tale of
IRON JOHN, often seen as an account of the
initiation of a young man into manhood and
which has been widely used in Jungian analysis.

RTC's production JEROME

a by turns hilarious and moving account of
the life and work of Jerome K Jerome the writer
of what is arguably the world's funniest book
"THREE MEN IN A BOAT" had its premier as
part of London's famed SOLO FESTIVAL
